Marie Casamayor-Harvey
Marie Casamayor-Harvey (b. 1961)
Immigrated to the United States from Colombia in 1973.
Marie was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba on March 10, 1961 to a Cuban father and Colombian mother a few years after the Cuban Revolution. When she was just six months old, her father feared for his life and sought asylum in the Colombian embassy in Havana. Marie and her mother fled to Colombia where her father was able to join them a few months later and the family was reunited.
Marie had a comfortable childhood in Cienaga, Colombia, though she recalls that her parents worried for her safety. When Marie was 12, the family decided to move again, this time to the United States. When they arrived in Miami, she still did not understand that the move would be permanent and she was heartbroken to learn that she would not be returning to her little dog.
Moving to the United States at that age was difficult for Marie. Though she learned English quickly, she had difficulty making friends at first. When she was 14, just as she was beginning to feel comfortable in Miami, her parents chose to move once again, this time to Houston. To practice their professions in the United States, her parents had to return to school and the family struggled through what Marie recalls as the “lean years.”
Eventually, Marie found a place for herself in the Houston underground punk rock scene, surrounding herself with artists, musicians, and outsiders. She went to college to study art and eventually received a Master’s degree in Bilingual Education. She dedicated herself to teaching and pursuing her own creative practice.
Currently, Marie lives with her husband in Houston, Texas. She is an established painter and collage artist and spends much of her time in her studio at Winter Street Studios. She is planning to visit Colombia soon—it will be her first time back.

Marie nació en Cienfuegos, Cuba el 10 de marzo de 1961 de padre cubano y madre colombiana pocos años después de la Revolución Cubana. Cuando ella tenía apenas seis meses, su padre que temía por su vida buscó asilo en la embajada de Colombia en La Habana. Marie y su madre huyeron a Colombia, donde su padre pudo reunirse con ellas unos meses más tarde y la familia fue reunida.
Marie tuvo una infancia cómoda en Ciénaga, Colombia, aunque recuerda que sus padres se preocupaban por su seguridad. Mudarse a los Estados Unidos a esa edad fue difícil para Marie. Aunque aprendió inglés rápidamente, tuvo dificultades para hacer amigos. Cuando tenía 14 años, justo cuando empezaba a sentirse cómoda en Miami, sus padres decidieron mudarse una vez más, esta vez a Houston. Para ejercer sus profesiones en los Estados Unidos, sus padres tuvieron que regresar a la escuela y la familia pasó por lo que Marie recuerda como los “años de escasez”. Eventualmente, Marie encontró un lugar para sí misma en la escena punk rock clandestina de Houston, rodeándose de artistas, músicos y extranjeros. Fue a la universidad para estudiar arte y finalmente recibió una maestría en Educación Bilingüe. Se dedicó a la enseñanza y a la búsqueda de su propia práctica creativa.
